About Lumpfish

The lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) is easy to recognise by its round, lumpy body, thick skin and rows of bony knobs along the sides. The pelvic fins form a strong sucking disc, and the first dorsal fin is buried under a ridge of skin and tubercles. Females grow much larger than males, reaching around 60 cm and several kilos, while males rarely exceed 30–40 cm. It is common along the whole Norwegian coast and across much of the North Atlantic. Adults spend much of the year in open water, feeding on crustaceans, jellyfish and small fish. In spring they move into shallow water to spawn, and the male guards the sticky egg mass until it hatches after about two months. In northern Norway there is a spring gillnet fishery for the roe, and farmed lumpfish are widely used to eat sea lice on salmon farms. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).

1. Norwegian sport-fishing records are registered with Villmarksliv, not with FishComp. Read the rules before you do anything else with the fish.
2. Records are based on weight and approved by a jury. You give the weight and length, where it was caught, the gear you used and any witnesses.
3. Keep your photos and notes from the catch. Logging it in FishComp does not register a record.
