About Tub gurnard

The tub gurnard (Chelidonichthys lucerna) is the largest of the gurnards, reaching about 75 cm and 5–6 kg, though 30 cm is a more typical size. Like other gurnards it has a big, bony, angular head, and the three lowest rays of each pectoral fin are free and used to feel along the seabed. The body is reddish brown to pink. The best field mark is the large pectoral fins, which are blue with greenish spots and a red edge and reach well past the front of the anal fin. It is similar to the grey gurnard but is told apart by its colour and long pectoral fins. It lives over sand and gravel, mostly in fairly shallow water, feeding on crustaceans and small fish. The range runs from West Africa to Norway. It is an important food fish in southern Europe but is not fished commercially in Norway. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
