About Gelatinous snailfish
The gelatinous snailfish (Liparis fabricii) is a small Arctic snailfish with a tadpole-like shape: a large head and a narrow, flattened tail section. Its skin is loose, jelly-like and scaleless, and, like other snailfishes, it has a sucking disc on the belly formed from the pelvic fins. It is usually brownish to dark with a paler underside. The species is circumpolar in water that is often below 0 °C, including the Barents, Kara and Beaufort seas, the northernmost North Atlantic, Baffin Bay and Hudson Bay. It has been found from just beneath the sea ice down to about 1,800 m, but it favours soft bottoms at 50–100 m. It rarely exceeds 20 cm, with a stated maximum of about 30 cm. It feeds on small crustaceans, mainly amphipods, and marine worms. It has no fishing value. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
