About Turbot

The turbot (Scophthalmus maximus, formerly Psetta maxima) is a large left-eyed flatfish with a thick, almost round body. It can reach about 1 m and 25 kg. The upper side is mottled grey and dotted with bony knobs in the skin, which is the surest way to tell it from the brill, whose skin is smooth and body narrower. Turbot live on sandy bottoms, often in fairly shallow water, and tolerate brackish conditions. Adults feed mainly on other bottom fish such as sandeels and gobies, along with worms and other bottom animals. Its range covers the northeast Atlantic, the Baltic and the Mediterranean, and in Norway along the coast north to Helgeland. It is one of the most valuable food fish from Norwegian waters. The Norwegian catch is small, taken with gillnets and Danish seines, by divers, and now and then by anglers over sand in summer. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).

How to register a Norwegian record

1. Norwegian sport-fishing records are registered with Villmarksliv, not with FishComp. Read the rules before you do anything else with the fish.
2. Records are based on weight and approved by a jury. You give the weight and length, where it was caught, the gear you used and any witnesses.
3. Keep your photos and notes from the catch. Logging it in FishComp does not register a record.
