About Jeffreys's goby

Jeffreys's goby (Buenia jeffreysii) is one of the smallest gobies in Norwegian waters, reaching only about 6 cm. It has a slender, pale grey to greenish body, often speckled with darker marks, and 25–30 scales along the lateral line. Like other gobies, it has two dorsal fins and pelvic fins fused into a sucker-like disc. It lives on mud, sand and gravel from the shore down to about 300 m. The species occurs from Brittany to Iceland and Norway, and here it has been found along the entire coast, although little is known about how common it is. Being so small and living hidden on the seabed, it is seldom noticed and is easily confused with other small gobies. It probably feeds on small crustaceans and other bottom animals. It has no angling value but occasionally turns up in dredge samples and shrimp trawls. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
