The lovely hatchetfish (Argyropelecus aculeatus), also called the Atlantic silver hatchetfish, is a tiny deep-sea fish of up to about 8 cm. Its body is tall and extremely flattened, shaped much like the blade of a hatchet, and it is mirror-silver all over. Rows of light organs run along the belly, with more on the head. Small spines on the underside of the tail help separate it from other hatchetfishes. It lives in the dim twilight zone of all the world's oceans, usually a few hundred metres down, and rises towards the surface at night to feed before sinking again at dawn. Small individuals eat mostly tiny crustaceans such as ostracods and copepods, while larger ones also take krill, molluscs and small fish. In Norway it is an irregular visitor from warmer water and is listed as Not Applicable (NA) on the Norwegian Red List 2021.
