About Trout

Trout, here the brown trout (Salmo trutta), is Norway's most common freshwater fish. Stream trout are often golden brown with black and red spots, while sea trout are bright silver with scattered black spots. Trout have an adipose fin, and compared with salmon they have a thicker tail wrist, a less forked tail and an upper jaw reaching past the eye. All brown trout spawn in autumn on gravel in running water. Some spend their whole lives in the stream, some move into lakes, and sea trout feed in salt water before returning to the river to spawn. They eat insects, crustaceans and fish. Stream fish stay small, but lake and sea trout can pass 10 kg, with rare giants around 15 to 20 kg. Fly, spinners, worm and trolling all work. Coastal sea trout fishing is popular in spring and autumn; check local rules and closed seasons. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).

How to register a Norwegian record

1. Norwegian sport-fishing records are registered with Villmarksliv, not with FishComp. Read the rules before you do anything else with the fish.
2. Records are based on weight and approved by a jury. You give the weight and length, where it was caught, the gear you used and any witnesses.
3. Keep your photos and notes from the catch. Logging it in FishComp does not register a record.
