About Meagre
The meagre (Argyrosomus regius) is a big, elongated fish with silvery sides, a bronze sheen on the back and large scales. It has a large mouth whose inside is golden yellow, a handy identification mark, and two nearly joined dorsal fins, the rear one long. It can reach around 2 m and well over 50 kg, although fish over 1.2 m are unusual. It lives in coastal waters of the eastern Atlantic from the English Channel to West Africa, and in the Mediterranean and Black Sea, both near the bottom and higher in the water, usually shallower than 100 m. Adults chase schooling fish such as sardines and mullet, and also take crustaceans. During spring and summer spawning, males produce loud drumming calls with the swim bladder. In southern Europe it is a popular food and sport fish. In Norway it is a very rare visitor and listed as Not Applicable (NA) on the Norwegian Red List 2021.
