About Eurasian minnow

The Eurasian minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus) is Norway's smallest member of the carp family, usually 7–10 cm and rarely more than about 14 cm. It is slim and almost trout-shaped, with tiny scales, no barbels and a row of dark blotches or bars along the sides. At spawning time in late spring and early summer the males become brilliantly coloured, with a red belly, dark back and green and golden sheen. Minnows live in shoals in clear streams, rivers and lakes, often over stony or gravelly shallows. They eat insect larvae, small crustaceans, fish eggs and plant material, competing directly with young trout. In Norway the species was originally found only in the southeast, parts of Trøndelag and Troms, and much of Finnmark, but people have spread it, largely through its use as bait, and it now occurs in every county. Using live fish as bait and moving fish between waters is not allowed in Norway. It is Least Concern.

How to register a Norwegian record

1. Norwegian sport-fishing records are registered with Villmarksliv, not with FishComp. Read the rules before you do anything else with the fish.
2. Records are based on weight and approved by a jury. You give the weight and length, where it was caught, the gear you used and any witnesses.
3. Keep your photos and notes from the catch. Logging it in FishComp does not register a record.
