The bogue (Boops boops) is a sea bream named for its very large eyes; the scientific name means 'ox-eye'. It is more streamlined than most bream, with a greyish-blue back, silvery or golden flanks with three or four faint lengthwise stripes, and a dark lateral line. Typical adults are 20 to 25 cm, and the largest reach roughly 36 cm. Bogue form big schools over sand, rock and seagrass, usually shallower than 100 m but sometimes down to 350 m, rising towards the surface at night. They eat seaweed and seagrass as well as small crustaceans and plankton. The core range is the eastern Atlantic from Angola to Biscay, plus the Mediterranean and Black Sea. North of the British Isles it is very rare, and in Norway only a chance visitor. In southern Europe it is a common food fish and a frequent catch for harbour anglers.
