The glacier lantern fish (Benthosema glaciale) is a small, silvery deep-water fish with large eyes and rows of light organs, or photophores, on its head and belly. It is the most common lanternfish in the North Atlantic and a key species of the mid-water zone, both in the open ocean and in deep Norwegian fjords such as Masfjorden and the fjords around Bergen. It has been caught from the surface down to about 1,400 m, but by day it usually stays at 300–400 m. Many individuals rise towards the surface at night to feed and sink again before dawn, while others stay deep, and in winter some even reverse the pattern. It eats mainly Calanus and other copepods, plus krill. It rarely grows beyond 10 cm. It is an important part of the midwater ecosystem, but it is not fished. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
