About Threespot eelpout

The threespot eelpout (Lycodes rossi) is an Arctic member of the eelpout family, growing to about 30 cm, with some sources giving slightly larger sizes. The body is long and eel-like, with the dorsal, tail and anal fins joined in one continuous fringe, and a fairly large head. It resembles the reticulated eelpout but has fewer rays in the pectoral fins. It lives on the seabed, preferably on mud, from about 45 m down to 350–450 m, with young fish sometimes shallower. It favours very cold water, usually close to or below 0 °C. Its range is almost circumpolar, from Greenland east to the Laptev Sea and on to Alaska and Arctic Canada. It lives at 45–350 m in the Barents and Kara Seas. It feeds on crustaceans, bivalves and small fish. Little is known about its spawning. It is only caught in research trawls and has no fishery value. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
