The Arctic lanternfish (Protomyctophum arcticum) is a small deep-water fish in the lanternfish family. Like its relatives it is silvery, with a blunt head, large eyes, a big mouth and an adipose fin, and it carries groups of tiny light organs on the head and along the belly. It looks most like the glacier lanternfish, but the shape and arrangement of the light organs tell them apart. It is very small, reaching only about 6 cm. The species lives in the North Atlantic, including the Norwegian Sea, but occurs only irregularly in Norwegian waters and is not known to breed there. Lanternfish typically live in the middle depths of the ocean. Many stay deep by day and rise towards the surface at night to feed on zooplankton. It has no angling interest. Detailed knowledge of its own biology is very limited. Norwegian Red List 2021: Not Applicable (NA), as it occurs irregularly.
