The shagreen ray (Leucoraja fullonica) is a large skate with a long, pointed snout and a disc slightly wider than it is long. The upper side is plain grey to brown with small dark dots and very rough, with clusters of large thorns on the snout, by the eyes and over the shoulders. Two rows of spines run along the tail, and the two small dorsal fins near the tail tip are equal in size. The underside is white. It can reach about 1.2 m. It lives over sand and mud on the upper continental slope, mostly below 200 m, and eats mainly fish and crustaceans. The egg cases are amber with long horns. Once common on deep-water longlines along the coast north to the Trondheimsfjord, it now appears to be very rare in Norway. It is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the Norwegian Red List 2021, so release any you catch carefully and report the record.
