About Surmullet

The surmullet or striped red mullet (Mullus surmuletus) is a red bottom-feeding fish of the Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic that is turning up more and more often in Norway. Most are around 25 cm, with a maximum of about 40 cm and 1 kg. It has a spindle-shaped body with large, loose scales and two long pale barbels on the chin, used to taste and probe the sand for food. By day it is red with yellow stripes along the sides, while at night the pattern becomes blotchy. Its striped first dorsal fin separates it from the similar Mullus barbatus. It lives over sand and mud, most often at 30–60 m, feeding on small bottom animals. In Norway it is a regular summer visitor from the Swedish border to Vestland.
