The checkered wolf eel (Lycenchelys kolthoffi) is a small, slender eelpout. Its body is long and eel-like, and the dorsal and anal fins join the tail fin in one continuous fringe. As both its English and Norwegian names suggest, it carries a mottled, chequered pattern. This is a fish of frigid Arctic deep water, living on sand and mud down to about 1,000 m. It is known from Greenland east to Svalbard and the Kara Sea, and also from the Beaufort Sea off Alaska and Canada. Like most eelpouts, its feeding, breeding and behaviour are poorly known, though it probably eats small bottom animals. It is not an angling fish and is almost only seen in research trawls in the Barents Sea and around Svalbard. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
