About Ocean sunfish

The ocean sunfish (Mola mola) is one of the heaviest bony fish in the world and impossible to confuse with anything else. Its tall, flattened, almost circular body looks like a huge head without a tail. It swims by sculling a tall dorsal fin and a matching anal fin, and the tail is replaced by a short, scalloped rudder. Adults typically weigh several hundred kilos and can exceed a tonne. It lives in tropical and temperate seas worldwide. It is often seen lying flat at the surface, apparently sunbathing, but dives deep to feed on jellyfish and other gelatinous plankton, plus small fish and crustaceans. It now and then turns up along the Norwegian coast. It is not an angling fish, and selling it is banned in the EU. The Norwegian Red List 2021 lists it as Not Applicable (NA), and the IUCN as Vulnerable (VU).

Log your catchHow to register a Norwegian record
- Norwegian sport-fishing records are registered with Villmarksliv, not with FishComp. Read the rules before you do anything else with the fish.
- Records are based on weight and approved by a jury. You give the weight and length, where it was caught, the gear you used and any witnesses.
- Keep your photos and notes from the catch. Logging it in FishComp does not register a record.
