About Atlantic bluefin tuna

The Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) is the biggest of all tunas and among the fastest fish in the ocean. It has a powerful, torpedo-shaped body, a dark blue back, silvery sides, two dorsal fins set close together and a row of small yellow finlets in front of the crescent tail. Adults are often 2–3 m long and several hundred kilos, with records close to 700 kg. It spawns in the Mediterranean and the Gulf of Mexico, and the eastern stock migrates north after spawning to hunt mackerel, herring and other schooling fish. After decades of near absence, bluefin have returned in large numbers since the 2010s to the Norwegian coast, the North Sea and the Norwegian Sea, from summer well into autumn. Commercial fishing is quota-regulated, and recreational fishing is open only to teams approved by the Directorate of Fisheries, each of which may land one fish per season. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).

How to register a Norwegian record

1. Norwegian sport-fishing records are registered with Villmarksliv, not with FishComp. Read the rules before you do anything else with the fish.
2. Records are based on weight and approved by a jury. You give the weight and length, where it was caught, the gear you used and any witnesses.
3. Keep your photos and notes from the catch. Logging it in FishComp does not register a record.
