About Pollack

Pollack (Pollachius pollachius) looks a lot like saithe, but a few features give it away. Its lateral line is dark and bends sharply over the pectoral fin, the lower jaw sticks out well beyond the upper, and the back and flanks are brownish or bronze with a golden sheen. Pollack live in the north-east Atlantic from Morocco northwards. In Norway they occur along the whole coast and in the fjords, but are most common in the south and west and become scarce north of Helgeland. They favour hard ground such as reefs, steep rock faces and kelp forest, usually from a few metres down to around 100 m. Pollack are active predators on herring, sandeels and other small fish, plus shrimps and krill. Most fish are under about 80 cm, but they can reach roughly 1.3 m and more than 12 kg. Soft lures, spinners and flies all work, often best at dusk. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).

How to register a Norwegian record

1. Norwegian sport-fishing records are registered with Villmarksliv, not with FishComp. Read the rules before you do anything else with the fish.
2. Records are based on weight and approved by a jury. You give the weight and length, where it was caught, the gear you used and any witnesses.
3. Keep your photos and notes from the catch. Logging it in FishComp does not register a record.
