About Louvar
The louvar (Luvarus imperialis) is a large, odd-looking ocean fish and the only living member of its family, which is surprisingly related to the surgeonfishes. It has a teardrop-shaped, flattened body, a very steep, bulging forehead, a small mouth set low on the head and a big crescent tail. It is metallic blue-grey to silver with a pinkish sheen, and its fins are red, so it is hard to mistake. It can reach about 2 m and 150 kg, though most are smaller. Louvars live alone in the open ocean in warm and temperate seas worldwide, mostly near the surface, though they have been recorded down to about 1,000 m. They feed on soft, jelly-like plankton such as salps and comb jellies. In Norway the louvar is a very rare visitor, with only a few taken off the west coast, and it is not an angling species here.
