About Norway redfish

The Norway redfish (Sebastes viviparus), also called the lesser redfish, is the smallest of Norway's three redfish species. It is usually 15–25 cm and seldom larger than about 35 cm. It is red or pink, with big eyes, a spiny head and strong dorsal spines, often with a few darker blotches along the back. It is easily confused with young golden redfish, but in this species all five spines on the front gill cover point backwards. It is common from the Skagerrak north to the southwestern Barents Sea, including the fjords, and lives over rocky ground from about 10 m to around 450 m. It eats krill, other crustaceans and small fish. Like all redfish it bears live young, with females releasing larvae in summer. Anglers often catch it on bait or small jigs over rough ground in the fjords, frequently as bycatch. It is Least Concern in Norway, unlike the Endangered golden redfish.

1. Norwegian sport-fishing records are registered with Villmarksliv, not with FishComp. Read the rules before you do anything else with the fish.
2. Records are based on weight and approved by a jury. You give the weight and length, where it was caught, the gear you used and any witnesses.
