About Spotted lanternfish
The spotted lanternfish (Myctophum punctatum) is a small open-water fish of the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean, found from the surface down to about 1,000 m. It reaches up to around 11 cm. The body is slim, the eyes are large, and rows of small light organs along the belly and flanks give off a bluish glow; the arrangement of these organs is what scientists use to tell lanternfish species apart. It spends the day in deep water and rises towards the surface at dusk to feed, sinking again at dawn. Its diet is mainly copepods and krill. Lanternfish occur in huge numbers and are an important food source for larger fish, seabirds and marine mammals. It has been recorded in Norwegian waters but is not treated as resident there, so it is listed as Not Applicable (NA) on the Norwegian Red List 2021. It is of no interest to anglers.
