About Nilsson's pipefish

Nilsson's pipefish, or the lesser pipefish (Syngnathus rostellatus), is a small pipefish with a long, thin, angular body and a tube-shaped snout. It resembles the great pipefish but is much smaller, has a shorter snout and lacks the small crest on top of the head behind the eyes. It is brown to greenish brown. Most are under 15 cm, with a maximum of about 17–18 cm. The species lives in shallow coastal water in the northeast Atlantic, the North Sea and the Baltic, and it occurs along the Norwegian coast. It favours sandy bottoms and eelgrass beds and tolerates brackish water. With its long snout it sucks in small crustaceans such as copepods and amphipods. As in other pipefish, the eggs are carried by the male, in a pouch under his tail, usually in summer. It has no fishing value. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
