Reinhardt's snailfish (Careproctus reinhardti) is a small Arctic snailfish with a soft, slimy, almost translucent body, a large head and a long, tapering tail. Its dorsal and anal fins merge with the tail fin, and a small sucking disc formed from the pelvic fins sits under the head. It grows to about 27 cm. The species lives in cold, salty water of roughly –1.7 to 4.5 °C, from Greenland and Svalbard east to the Kara Sea; in Norwegian waters it is best known around Jan Mayen. It stays close to the bottom or in the water just above it, at about 150–1,000 m, and probably feeds on small crustaceans. Identifying snailfishes in this genus is notoriously hard, and several species described from Norway are now treated as the same species. It breeds in Norwegian waters, but little else is known about it. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
