About Vendace

The vendace (Coregonus albula) is a small, silvery member of the salmon family closely related to the whitefish. In Norway it rarely exceeds about 25 cm and 100 g. The easiest way to separate it from whitefish is the underbite: the lower jaw juts out beyond the upper one, whereas whitefish have an overbite. Vendace live in shoals in large, cold lakes. In summer they feed on zooplankton, rising towards the surface at night and sinking into deep water by day to avoid predatory fish. Most mature at 3–5 years and spawn in autumn, in lakes as well as rivers. In Norway the species occurs naturally in the big lakes of eastern Norway, above all Mjøsa. The Norwegian name comes from the river Lågen, where vendace running up to spawn in October were traditionally caught with seines and dip nets. The roe is sold as a delicacy (løyrom). Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
