About Atlantic snailfish

The Atlantic snailfish (Liparis montagui), also called Montagu's sea snail, is a small snailfish that reaches only 10–12 cm. It has a tadpole-like shape, with a large, rounded head, a body that narrows towards the tail and smooth, scaleless skin. Colour varies from brown and reddish to yellow, often with dark stripes or blotches. It differs from its close relative, the common sea snail, in having dorsal and anal fins that are not joined to the tail fin, and a relatively small sucker. It is common along the entire Norwegian coast and ranges from the English Channel and British Isles to Iceland and the southwestern Barents Sea. It lives from the shore down to about 30 m, hiding under stones and among seaweed, but does not reach as far into the fjords as its relative. It feeds on small crabs, shrimps, amphipods and other small invertebrates. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).

How to register a Norwegian record

1. Norwegian sport-fishing records are registered with Villmarksliv, not with FishComp. Read the rules before you do anything else with the fish.
2. Records are based on weight and approved by a jury. You give the weight and length, where it was caught, the gear you used and any witnesses.
3. Keep your photos and notes from the catch. Logging it in FishComp does not register a record.
