About Crystal goby

The crystal goby (Crystallogobius linearis) is a tiny goby and the only almost fully transparent fish in northern Europe; only the eyes and a few small dots near the jaw and fins show. It has an undershot jaw, and breeding males grow two large fang-like teeth in the lower jaw. Females lack pelvic fins and have a very reduced first dorsal fin. Males reach about 5 cm and females about 4 cm. Unlike most gobies, it lives in schools in open water, usually at 20 to 80 m and feeds on zooplankton. It lives only about a year, spawning in spring and summer, often inside empty worm tubes where the male guards the eggs, and dying afterwards. The range extends from Gibraltar and the Mediterranean north to Lofoten. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
