About Blue whiting

The blue whiting (Micromesistius poutassou) is a slim, silvery member of the cod family. It has three widely spaced dorsal fins, two anal fins, a slightly protruding lower jaw, no chin barbel and a black mouth cavity. The back is bluish grey and the sides silver, with a clear dark lateral line. Most fish are 25 to 35 cm, rarely over 40 cm. It ranges across the north-east Atlantic from North Africa to the Barents Sea and Svalbard, and into the Mediterranean. It lives in mid-water from the surface to about 700 m. Food is mainly krill and other small crustaceans. The main spawning is in February–April west of the British Isles, after which much of the stock feeds northward in the Norwegian Sea. It supports a huge trawl fishery for fishmeal, while anglers catch it only occasionally when fishing deep. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
