About Crucian carp

The crucian carp (Carassius carassius) is a deep-bodied member of the carp family with a blunt head, a rounded, convex dorsal fin and no barbels, which separates it from the common carp. It is usually bronze to golden with a darker, greenish back. Growth depends on food and crowding: in dense populations it seldom exceeds 10 to 15 cm and 100 g, while in rich waters it can reach about 45 cm and 3 kg. Where pike are present, crucians often grow extra tall. The species is famous for surviving months without oxygen under ice by converting stored energy into alcohol. It lives in small ponds, tarns and overgrown lakes, feeding on bottom animals, zooplankton and plants, and spawns in May and June in warm, weedy shallows. It reached south-eastern Norway naturally, but people have spread it over much of the country, as far north as Tromsø. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
