About Sailray

The sailray (Rajella lintea) is a deep-water skate that is easy to recognise by its pale colouring. The upper side is a washed-out greyish white and the underside pure white. It has a long, pointed snout and can reach about 1.2 m. The species lives in the North Atlantic from Iceland and Norway southwards. In Norwegian waters it is most common in the Norwegian Trench, but it also occurs north into the Barents Sea and south of Svalbard. It lives on soft bottom in deep water, at roughly 150 to 650 m. Like other skates it is a bottom feeder, probably taking crustaceans and fish, but its biology has been little studied. For anglers it is a rare catch that may turn up when bait-fishing on the bottom in very deep water, and it should be released. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
