About Yarrell's blenny

Yarrell's blenny (Chirolophis ascanii) is a small bottom fish recognised by the fringed tentacles above its eyes and on its head. It lives in the northeastern Atlantic, around the British Isles, Iceland and the Faroes, and is common along the whole Norwegian coast up to the Barents Sea. It favours hard ground, hiding in kelp, rock crevices and wrecks, from shallow water down to a few hundred metres but most often at 10 to 40 metres. The body is elongated with a long, spiny dorsal fin. Colour ranges from yellowish to reddish brown with darker cross-bars, and a dark stripe often runs from the eye down the cheek. It rarely exceeds 25 cm, and most adults are 10 to 15 cm. It feeds on small bottom-living invertebrates. It resembles the butterfish but lacks that species' row of dark spots along the back. It is not a target for anglers. Norwegian Red List: Least Concern.
