Sloane's viperfish (Chauliodus sloani) is one of the best-known predators of the deep sea. It has a long, slender, silvery-blue body and a mouth armed with huge, fixed fangs so long that they sit outside the closed mouth and form a cage around captured prey. The jaws can open to almost 90 degrees, letting it swallow prey of up to around half its own length. The first dorsal fin ray is greatly elongated and tipped with a light organ that may serve as a lure, and two rows of light organs run along the belly. It reaches roughly 25–35 cm. It lives in warm and temperate oceans around the globe. By day it stays deep, down to about 2,000 m, and at night it rises towards shallower water to hunt small fish and crustaceans. In Norwegian waters it is extremely rare, with only two known records, both from Svalbard. Norwegian Red List 2021: Not Applicable (NA).
