The goldfish (Carassius auratus) is a member of the carp family from East Asia that has been kept and bred in captivity for a very long time. It is a close relative of the crucian carp, with a similar deep body but no barbels. Aquarium fish are often red, orange or white, yet their offspring in the wild tend to revert to a plain bronze or olive colour. In Norway the goldfish is an alien species. The first known wild population was recorded in Stamnestjern in Vestby in the 1980s, probably after aquarium releases. The Norwegian Alien Species List 2023 rates it as high risk (HI). Goldfish tolerate warm, oxygen-poor water and eat plants, insect larvae, zooplankton and detritus. The sticky eggs are attached to water plants. Wild fish are usually 12–22 cm long. Never release aquarium fish into nature.
