About Common dace

The common dace (Leuciscus leuciscus) is a slim member of the carp family with a narrow snout and a small, slightly underslung mouth. It is covered in large silvery scales, with a dark grey to olive back and a yellowish eye. It can look like a roach, but is slimmer and lacks the roach's red eye and reddish fins. It rarely exceeds 25 to 30 cm and half a kilo. Dace live mainly in running water, often shoaling in faster stretches of rivers and at lake inlets and outlets. They eat insects, larvae, small crustaceans and some plant matter. Spawning is early, in April and May, on gravel or sand in flowing water. In Norway the species is found only in the south-east, including Glomma, Mjøsa and the Drammen river system. It can be caught on small flies and worm. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
