About Arctic staghorn sculpin

The Arctic staghorn sculpin (Gymnocanthus tricuspis) is an Arctic sculpin whose Norwegian name, glattulke, means smooth sculpin: its skin is naked, without scales or large knobs on the head. The gill cover carries a few spines, and the uppermost one is long with small backward-pointing hooks. The back is dark, often with two blackish-brown bands of blotches along the side, while the belly is pale, yellowish in females and marked with round white spots in males. In Norway it reaches about 21 cm, and off Greenland up to 30 cm. The species is found around the Arctic Ocean and in the northern Atlantic. In Norwegian waters it is common around Svalbard but scarce along the Finnmark coast. It lives close to shore at roughly 10 to 240 m and spawns in autumn. Anglers occasionally catch it at Svalbard and in Finnmark, usually on small baited hooks near the bottom. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
