The smooth sandeel (Gymnammodytes semisquamatus) is a slim sand eel, typically about 15 cm and at most around 30 cm long. It differs from other sand eels in lacking skin folds along the belly and in having scales only on the rear part of the body, which is what its Latin name, meaning half-scaled, refers to. The back is golden brown or pinkish and the belly silvery. It has a more southerly range than its relatives, from Portugal and the British Isles to the North Sea and western Norway. Norwegian records come from 20–200 m between Rogaland and Møre og Romsdal, and more recently from the Viking Bank in the North Sea and off Sunnmøre. It lives over sand, burrows into it and feeds on plankton. Spawning appears to take place in summer, around June–July. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
