About Megrim

The megrim (Lepidorhombus whiffiagonis) is a left-eyed flatfish of the turbot family. Its body is long, thin and almost translucent, which is where the Norwegian name 'glass turbot' comes from. It has a strikingly large, protrusible mouth, and the lateral line arches clearly above the pectoral fin. The eyed side is pale sandy to reddish brown with darker, irregular blotches and feels rough, and the blind side is white. It can grow to about 60 cm and 3 kg. It lives on sand and mud, mostly at 100–700 m, from North Africa and the Mediterranean to Iceland and Norway, where it is scarce along the coast up to Lofoten. It hunts small fish, squid and crustaceans. Elsewhere in Europe it is a valuable trawl catch, especially for the French and Spanish markets, but in Norway it turns up mainly as bycatch and occasionally on baited deep-water rigs. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).

How to register a Norwegian record

1. Norwegian sport-fishing records are registered with Villmarksliv, not with FishComp. Read the rules before you do anything else with the fish.
2. Records are based on weight and approved by a jury. You give the weight and length, where it was caught, the gear you used and any witnesses.
3. Keep your photos and notes from the catch. Logging it in FishComp does not register a record.
