About American plaice

The American plaice (Hippoglossoides platessoides), also known as long rough dab, is a right-eyed flatfish of the North Atlantic. It is fairly slender and thin for a flatfish, with a large mouth and big, rough scales that rub off easily. The eyed side is grey or reddish brown and the blind side white. In Norwegian waters it rarely exceeds 50 cm, while in the western Atlantic it can reach about 70 cm. It lives on soft bottoms from about 10 m to several hundred metres and is found along the entire Norwegian coast and in the Barents Sea, and from Greenland to New England in the west. It feeds on worms, crustaceans, brittle stars and small fish, and spawns in spring, with eggs drifting in open water. There is no directed fishery for it in Norway, but it is common trawl bycatch and occasionally taken on baited rigs in deep water. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).

How to register a Norwegian record

1. Norwegian sport-fishing records are registered with Villmarksliv, not with FishComp. Read the rules before you do anything else with the fish.
2. Records are based on weight and approved by a jury. You give the weight and length, where it was caught, the gear you used and any witnesses.
3. Keep your photos and notes from the catch. Logging it in FishComp does not register a record.
