About White bream

The white bream or silver bream (Blicca bjoerkna) is a deep-bodied, silvery fish that looks like the common bream, and small fish of the two species can be hard to tell apart. White bream have larger eyes relative to the head, larger scales and fewer scale rows, and bigger fish often show reddish pectoral and pelvic fins. It grows to about 35 cm and rarely more than 1–1.5 kg; the Norwegian rod record is just over 1 kg, from the river Nitelva in 2004. It lives in nutrient-rich, slow rivers and lakes. Young fish eat zooplankton, while adults search the bottom for insect larvae and other small animals. Spawning takes place in June. In Norway it is native only in the southeast, mainly in the Glomma and Halden river systems. Because of releases elsewhere it is on the 2023 alien species list (SE) for areas outside that range; on the Norwegian Red List 2021 it is Least Concern (LC).
