About Fivebeard rockling

The fivebeard rockling (Ciliata mustela) is a small, eel-like member of the cod order with a short head and dark brown to reddish-brown colouring. It is named for its five barbels, four on the snout and one under the chin. The first dorsal fin is reduced to a single long ray followed by a fringe of tiny, constantly flickering rays in a groove, while the second dorsal fin is long and low. The species ranges from Portugal to Iceland and along the entire Norwegian coast. It lives on the shore and in shallow water down to about 20 m, typically under stones and among seaweed. At night it uses its barbels to find small crustaceans, worms and little fish. Adults are usually 10–20 cm and rarely exceed 25 cm. Spawning takes place in winter and early spring. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
