The European barracuda (Sphyraena sphyraena) is a long, torpedo-shaped predator with a pointed head, a jutting lower jaw and a mouth lined with sharp teeth. It is grey-blue to greenish above and silvery on the flanks, often with faint dark bars, and its two dorsal fins are set well apart. The species lives in the eastern Atlantic from the Bay of Biscay down the African coast to Angola, and in the Mediterranean, the Black Sea and around the Canaries and Azores; it is not a regular Norwegian species. Schools cruise near the surface over sand and rock, mostly in the top 50 metres and occasionally down to around 100 metres, hunting small fish and squid. Typical fish are about 60 cm, the largest roughly 1.6 m. Anglers in southern Europe take them on spinners, plugs and by trolling. It is Not Applicable (NA) on the Norwegian Red List 2021, and IUCN lists it as Least Concern.
