About Rakery beaconlamp
The rakery beaconlamp (Lampanyctus macdonaldi) is a small lanternfish of the deep North Atlantic, reaching roughly 16 cm. Like its relatives it has a blunt head, big eyes, a wide mouth, an adipose fin and rows of tiny light organs on the head and belly. It lives in the dark mid-water and deep layers of the North Atlantic. Lanternfishes typically migrate upwards at night to feed on zooplankton, especially small crustaceans, and sink again at dawn; this species is thought to behave in a similar way. They are an important food source for larger fish, squid and seabirds. In Norwegian waters it is an irregular visitor that is not known to breed, so it is listed as Not Applicable (NA) on the Norwegian Red List 2021. It is of no interest to anglers and is only seen in research trawls.
