The basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus) is bigger than any other fish except the whale shark. Adults are usually 7 to 10 m long, and the largest can exceed 12 m. The back is dark steel grey to greyish brown and the belly paler. Look for the huge mouth, the long gill slits that almost encircle the head, a pointed snout and a crescent-shaped tail. Basking sharks are completely harmless to people: they cruise slowly at the surface with their mouths open, straining zooplankton from the water with long gill rakers. The species occurs in temperate seas worldwide. Every summer basking sharks arrive off the Norwegian coast, sometimes close to land. In winter they move south and deeper, diving to about 1,000 m. Centuries of hunting for their oil-rich livers caused a sharp decline, and targeted fishing was banned in Norway and the EU in 2007. Norwegian Red List 2021: Endangered (EN). IUCN: Endangered (EN).
