About Tusk

The tusk (Brosme brosme) is easy to tell from other cod-like fish because it has just one long dorsal fin. The dorsal, tail and anal fins meet at the base but are separated by deep notches, and all have a white outer edge with a dark band inside it. It is brown to yellowish brown above and paler below, while young fish have broad yellow cross-bands. A typical fish is around 70 cm and 3 kg, but it can reach about 1.2 m and 15–20 kg. Tusk live on hard ground with rocks and gravel, from about 50 to 1,000 m, most often at 200–500 m in deep fjords and along the shelf edge. They feed on crustaceans such as Norway lobster, squat lobsters and shrimps. Found along the whole Norwegian coast, tusk are a regular catch for deep-water anglers and longliners. The IGFA world record, 17.2 kg, came from Sørøya. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).

How to register a Norwegian record

1. Norwegian sport-fishing records are registered with Villmarksliv, not with FishComp. Read the rules before you do anything else with the fish.
2. Records are based on weight and approved by a jury. You give the weight and length, where it was caught, the gear you used and any witnesses.
3. Keep your photos and notes from the catch. Logging it in FishComp does not register a record.
