The pale eelpout (Lycodes pallidus) is a small Arctic eelpout that grows to about 26 cm. It has the typical long eelpout body with a large head, and its dorsal and anal fins merge with the tail fin. As the name suggests, it is fairly pale in colour. It lives on the seabed in cold water and has been recorded from a few tens of metres down to about 1,750 m. It lives in cold Arctic seas, including Norwegian waters. The Norwegian zoologist Robert Collett described it in 1879. As with most eelpouts, its diet and behaviour are poorly known, though it probably eats small bottom animals. It is not an angling fish and is almost only caught in research trawls. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
