About Greenland halibut

The Greenland halibut (Reinhardtius hippoglossoides) is a flatfish with its eyes on the right side, a large mouth and sharp teeth. It stands out from other flatfish because its left eye sits on the upper edge of the head and both sides are dark: the upper side is grey-brown to almost black, and the blind side is greyish rather than white. It lives in deep, cold water, usually at 500–1,000 m, mainly along the continental slope from the North Sea to Svalbard and Franz Josef Land. It eats fish such as capelin, redfish and eelpouts. The northeast Arctic stock spawns in autumn and winter at 500–800 m along the slope between 70 and 75° N. It can reach roughly 120 cm and 20 kg. It is a valuable food fish, and the fishery is tightly regulated. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC). IUCN lists it as Near Threatened (NT) globally.
