About Painted goby

The painted goby (Pomatoschistus pictus) is one of the common small gobies of the Norwegian coast. It is usually under 6 cm, though some reach about 9–9.5 cm. The body is pale fawn with a row of dark double spots along the flanks. Its best feature is the dorsal fins, which carry neat rows of black spots separated by shining blue and pink bands, a pattern that distinguishes it from similar gobies. It lives over gravel, sand and shell bottoms from the shore down to about 50 m, and young fish are sometimes found in rock pools. Its food is mainly small crustaceans, for example amphipods and copepods. Spawning takes place in summer: the male makes a nest under an empty mussel or clam shell and guards the eggs until they hatch. It ranges from Spain to the Kattegat and western Norway, north to the Trondheimsfjord. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).

How to register a Norwegian record

1. Norwegian sport-fishing records are registered with Villmarksliv, not with FishComp. Read the rules before you do anything else with the fish.
2. Records are based on weight and approved by a jury. You give the weight and length, where it was caught, the gear you used and any witnesses.
3. Keep your photos and notes from the catch. Logging it in FishComp does not register a record.
