About Brook trout

The brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) is actually a char, native to eastern North America and stocked in many other countries, including Norway. Its dark olive back is covered with pale, worm-like marbling that often extends onto the dorsal fin and tail. The sides carry yellow spots and small red dots ringed with blue, the belly and lower fins are red-tinged, and those fins have a crisp white leading edge followed by a black stripe. In Norway it seldom exceeds half a kilo, and the biggest rod-caught fish have weighed just over 2 kg. It likes cold, clear water and tolerates acidity. First stocked in Norway in 1883, it was later released into many acidified lakes in the south and now has more than 200 populations. It eats insects, crustaceans and small fish, and spawns on gravel in autumn. Anglers catch it on fly, spinners and worm. It is an alien species, rated high risk on Norway's 2023 Alien Species List.
