The European brook lamprey (Lampetra planeri) is a small lamprey that spends its whole life in fresh water, the only Norwegian lamprey to do so. Like all lampreys it lacks jaws and paired fins, having instead a round sucking disc with blunt teeth and seven small gill openings behind each eye. Adults are usually 8 to 15 cm long, blue-green or brownish on the back, yellowish on the sides and white below. Unlike the river lamprey, its two dorsal fins are joined. Most of its life, often around six years, is spent as a blind larva buried in sand and silt in streams, filtering algae and organic particles. Once transformed into an adult it stops feeding altogether. Adults spawn in small groups on gravel in running water in spring and die soon afterwards. In Norway it lives in the south, in much the same areas as the river lamprey. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
