About Asp

The asp (Leuciscus aspius, formerly Aspius aspius) is the only true predator among Norway's carp-family fishes. It has a long body, a pointed snout and a large mouth. The back is greenish with a silver and blue sheen, the flanks paler and the belly silvery white. The asp is native to eastern and central Europe and western Asia. In Norway it has one of the smallest natural ranges of any freshwater fish: the lower Glomma river system, Lake Øyeren up to Bingsfoss and the lower Leira and Nitelva rivers. It has also turned up, probably introduced, in the Halden watercourse. Asp live in large rivers and lakes, hunt small fish near the surface and spawn on gravel in flowing water in spring. Typical fish are around 55 cm, and the largest known reach about 1.2 m and 9 kg. It is a popular sport fish, taken on spoons, plugs and flies. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).

How to register a Norwegian record

1. Norwegian sport-fishing records are registered with Villmarksliv, not with FishComp. Read the rules before you do anything else with the fish.
2. Records are based on weight and approved by a jury. You give the weight and length, where it was caught, the gear you used and any witnesses.
3. Keep your photos and notes from the catch. Logging it in FishComp does not register a record.
